Boys Season Summary

It was a great fencing season for a great team!

The Cougar Fencers finished the season with an outstanding 10-4 record - placing second in the league standings. Most importantly, the team demonstrated its determination, skill and grit - in every competition! Centereach swordsmen defeated such teams as Brentwood, Huntington, Commack, Mamaroneck, Newfield, Cold Spring Harbor, and Whitman!

This year's team was anchored by six strong seniors - foilist Nick Sperduti, epeeists Mike Quackenbush, Will James, and Kris Walsh, and saberists Alex Murphy and Connor Pearce. This group of competitors used their experience and skill to propel the team to victory after victory. The many contributions and accomplishments of Kris, Will, Nick, and Mike were recognized at the Section XI County Tournament where they were named to the All County Coaches Team.

The Centereach team also brought to the varsity 'strip' a large number of underclassmen - and they demonstrated they were up to the task of competing at the highest level. Key among these athletes were junior Jimmy Juvet who compiled an outstanding dual meet record and went on to win the 2005 County Championship title in saber fencing! Sophomores Anthony Cammarano and Dominick Fazzari proved to be a 'dynamic duo' by winning more than forty bouts. Junior Joe Mulvaney and sophomores Drew Santorello, Mark Werner, Nick Quackenbush and Rob Conlan comprised a nucleus of hungry young athletes eager to jump into the varsity meets. Adding further depth to the squad were junior Scott Traganos, sophomores James Burnett, Josh Kranz, Mark Mahoney, Lee Gomez, John Calestini and freshmen Doug Liantonio, Kyle Chiofolo and Nick Graziadei.

Newcomers to the squad were freshmen Andrew Gagliano and Brian McCarthy and sophomores Ken Godberson and Jose Suarez.

At the start of the season, the team got off to a bumpy start with a loss to Ward Melville, but from that point on the team delivered the 'hits' to its opponents for a string of wins. By the end of the season, the team had not only established itself as one of Suffolk's top teams; it had built the foundations for great seasons in the years to come.

Girls Season Summary

After compiling an impressive 9-3 league record in dual meet competition, the Centereach Girls Fencing Team attained its ultimate goal - winning the GOLD at the Suffolk County Championships! Led by a determined group of senior athletes, the fencers can proudly say - 'It was a Championship Season.'

Throughout the year, seniors Lisa Granshaw and Ashley Haughwout were a devastating one-two punch in foil fencing, compiling an amazing number of victories. Lisa's 28 wins and Ashley's 19 wins earned them spots on the All County Team. In the County Tournament individual foil competition Lisa captured the silver medal, and Ashley took home the bronze medal. In addition, Lisa was named the 2005 Fencers' Fencer by the other Suffolk teams for her outstanding sportsmanship.

Backing up these two seniors were junior Meghan Hayward and sophomores Cristina Sousa, Joann Reyes, Amy Chandra, and Brittany Fitzpatrick. New to the foil squad were freshman Tara Banach, and seventh graders Kelsey Alexovitz, Melissa Barravecchio, Amanda Burnett, Michelle Burnett, and Karli Foster.

The saber team featured seniors Antoinette Leonardi and Su-Yee Lin. Antoinette posted 23 dual meet wins, good enough for Second Team All County honors. Rouding out the saber squad were juniors Rebecca Au and Alana Carreras, sophomores Stephanie Castellano, freshman Lisa Verzino, and 8th graders Kelly James and Alexandra Sperduti.

The epee team dominated, lead by the deadly duo, seniors Angela Franco and Larissa Andrejko. Angela defeated 29 opponents, earning her a spot not only on the First Team All County, but also on the All Long Island Team. Larissa was named on the Second All County Team with her 18 dual meet victories. In the individual epee county competition, Larissa and Angela captured further distiction by taking the 5th and 6th places, respectively.

Helping out the seniors were juniors Brianne Musselwhite and Nicole Zumpano, sophomores Allison Ratis, Amanda Birro, and Carolyn Stallard, freshman Courtney Fraccalvieri, and 8th grader Paige Santorello.

The girls improved week after week as the season progressed. They ended the season with five straight victories, including a key win over a powerful Newfield team.

The unparalleled efforts of our seniors will be missed. At the same time, the returning girls are both capable and eager to 'step up,' setting the stage for what's bound to be another excellent season next year! Congratulations to our County Champions!!
